Core Modules on Military Exposures
WRIISC offers five modules that provide the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to care for Veterans with military environmental exposure concerns. This includes information on how to identify and communicate about deployment-related environmental exposures, as well as trainings related to common exposure concerns including airborne hazards, Gulf War exposures, and more. Clinicians can earn a Level I certification in Military Environmental Exposures upon successful completion of these core modules. For more information on how to obtain a Level 1 certification in military environmental exposures, visit https://acpm.org/education-events/education/military-environmental-exposures-certifications/. |

| Assessing Deployment Related Environmental Exposures (1.0 CEUs) |
Intends to increase clinician knowledge and to inform learners about how to recognize the role and importance of deployment related exposure assessment, identify steps for determining deployment related environmental exposures, provide available post deployment health resources, and describe approaches to communicating deployment related exposure issues to Veterans, their caregivers, and their family members. Mandatory Training for VHA/VBA Compensation and Pension Providers & VHA Clinicians |
ID: 33195 | ID: 1070234 | |
| Airborne Hazards (1.0 CEUs) |
Provides clinicians with the knowledge needed to identify and understand deployment-related airborne hazards concerns of Veterans. | ID: 33405 | ID: 1070422
| Gulf War Illness (1.0 CEUs) |
Provides health care providers with the knowledge needed to identify, diagnose, manage and appropriately treat Gulf War illness in Veterans and to become familiar with and be able to apply the VA-DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for Chronic Multi Symptom Illness as it can be applied to Gulf War Illness. | ID: 34572 | ID: 1074205
| Chronic Multisymptom Illness (1.25 CEUs) |
Offers healthcare professionals an opportunity to gain insight into chronic multi-symptom illness including the incidence in civilian and military populations, defining characteristics and the latest resources and management strategies to consider for care. | ID: 38029 | ID: 1084440
| Depleted Uranium and Toxic Embedded Fragments (1.0 CEUs) |
Provides health care professionals with knowledge about the current research on health effects in Depleted Uranium or DU-exposed (Pronounced D-U) populations, information about enrolling Veterans with suspected DU or toxic embedded fragments (TEF) fragments into VA registry programs, and guidance about the clinical approach to Veterans with TEF. | ID: 39365 | ID: 1087697 |
Advanced Case Study Modules
Each case study module is designed to provide more advanced training and enrich clinicians' understanding of best practices to manage the most common occupational and environmental
concerns faced by Veterans. Clinicians can earn a Level 2 certification in Military Environmental Exposures upon successful completion of the advanced case studies, an introductory module, additional required readings/materials, and answering post-test questions. Level 2 is only available to those who complete Level 1 certification. |
Introduction to Level 2 Certification (60 Minutes = 1.0 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to share the importance of education and training to ensure healthcare personnel have the competence to address military-related exposure concerns among veterans. By attending, clinicians will understand the general format of the Level 2 certification in Military Environmental Exposures and be able to explain eligibility criteria and purpose of Congressionally mandated VA programs. |
Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit (AHOBP) Exposures (60 Minutes = 1.0 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to provide additional information on airborne hazard and open pit exposures to providers who are interested in learning more about these exposures. |
Camp Lejeune: A Story of Fuels and Solvent |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to provide information for providers to understand exposures to fuels and solvents that occurred at Camp Lejeune and understand the health effects related to exposure to fuels and solvents. |
Depleted Uranium (DU), Black Goo, and K-2: Military Environmental Exposures at Karshi-Khanabad (K-2) Air Base (60 Minutes = 1 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to review the exposures at Karshi-Khanabad (K-2) Air Base in Uzbekistan. Health care professionals will be able to identify the types of military environmental exposures which occurred at this specific location and apply this knowledge in their care of Veterans. |
Embracing a New Way of Thinking: Supporting Veterans Living with Gulf War Illness (75 Minutes = 1.25 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to enhance the clinicians understanding of the complex array of exposures often encountered by military personnel during the 1990-1991 Gulf War and other combat deployments. Clinicians will be able to recognize diagnostic approaches and care planning for Veterans, and demonstrate competencies in the assessment and care for individuals with Gulf War Illness and other similar chronic multi-symptom illnesses. |
Gulf War I Service and Non-Gulf War Illness (GWI) Conditions (60 Minutes = 1 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to gain understanding of non-CMI conditions affecting Gulf War I Veterans through several case study examples. During this module the Gulf War Report and RAND report will be reviewed, along with Mycoplasma theory as a non-contributor to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and/or GWI. |
Ionizing Radiation (IR) and Health Concerns for Veterans (60 Minutes = 1 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to review what ionizing radiation energy is and its potential health effects. Providers will be able to understand the types of electromagnetic energy and describe the authority for the Ionizing Registry Exams. Last, they will be able to determine medical conditions that are presumed related to ionizing radiation exposure. This training is appropriate for interprofessional healthcare teams. |
Operation Tomodachi (60 Minutes = 1 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to review a radiation case study. Clinicians will learn about the Great Tohoku Earthquake and its subsequent Tsunami and the ultimate Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant meltdown in 2011. |
Toxic Embedded Fragments (TEF) and Depleted Uranium (DU) (60 Minutes = 1 CEUs) |
The purpose of this enduring, knowledge-based module is to discuss a clinical case for a Veteran with toxic embedded fragment and depleted uranium concerns. |
Vietnam and Agent Orange Health Concerns |
In this enduring, knowledge-based module, providers will learn how to access information and conduct environmental exposure assessments related to Agent Orange. They will be able to evaluate a Veteran with Agent Orange concerns and formulate a plan with appropriate referrals for follow-up care. |
