A Gulf War Experience
Penny Deere in dress uniform

Penny was pleased by her evaluation at the WRIISC. "I had a whole team to myself. The WRIISC staff dedicated themselves to me. Before the WRIISC, I didn't realize I needed to be validated. I felt the team listened to me." Having the entire WRIISC clinical team meet with her at one time was especially important. "At the end, everybody got together and gave me a roadmap, and this was the most useful part." Through her WRIISC visit, Penny was able to learn different coping skills; "My problems are still there, but I am better able to deal with them. The WRIISC opened the flood gates to many things that are happening for me today."

Honor, Courage, and Commitment: A Veteran's Story
Nancy Schiliro

Nancy describes her experience at the WRIISC as being the most positive clinical one she has had in the VA. Nancy says she came "seeking answers about her injuries (TBI) and PTSD but left with ten times the information." She enthusiastically speaks of the enormous attention to detail she received during the evaluation and the meticulous follow up. At the WRIISC, Nancy noted amazement at being seen by an entire clinical team in one place including a nurse practitioner, a neuropsychologist, a social worker, an occupational medicine physician and a health educator.

Brent Casey: A Veteran's Story
Brent Casey speaking

While at the WRIISC, Brent was struck by the comprehensiveness and highly personalized degree of the WRIISC evaluation. During his visit, the team of providers was able to diagnose him as having Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease) (ME/CFS (SEID)) and irritable bowel syndrome, which finally explained many of his symptoms. An important part of his WRIISC evaluation was receiving information on how to better manage his symptoms. Specific recommendation for his conditions included new medications for pain management, graded exercise to combat fatigue, and dietary information to minimize gastrointestinal symptoms.
