Migraines are intense headaches characterized by pain which is usually concentrated in one area of the head.

Other symptoms include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Vision changes
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light, noise or odor

Migraines are fairly common in the general population. Migraines also are diagnosed in the veteran population. One study showed that 36% of the service members who had served in Operation Iraqi Freedom had reported migraines compared to 12% in the U.S. civilian population.

Treatments for migraines include:

  • Rest
  • Avoiding triggering stimuli
  • Diet modification
  • Medications
  • Stress management
