This fellowship is sponsored by the Office of Academic Affiliations, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Fellowship site is part of the VA Palo Alto War Related Illness and Injury Study Center ( CA WRIISC) and is affiliated with Stanford University. The Fellowship start date is negotiable but the preferred start date is by January 2013.

The CA WRIISC Special Fellowship site is linked to two other WRIISC fellowship sites (Washington, DC and East Orange, NJ) as well as the VA Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) fellowship program (based at Palo Alto) for didactic, academic, and research efforts.

Fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research, educational activities, and clinical service delivery.

Program for MDs or PhDs with Research Interests in Complementary and Alternative Medicine

The CA WRIISC special Fellowship program for researchers (MD or PhD) in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) research is a two year program that aims to train talented postdoctoral health professionals and allied scientists to conduct research into the efficacy, effectiveness, safety, mechanisms of action, and cost-benefits of CAM therapies. Through the two-year Fellowship, Fellows will receive a firm grounding in CAM concepts and research issues, develop and conduct studies that will create the foundation for future treatments, and participate in the development of innovative tools and measurements for CAM and integrative approaches to care. We expect the program to produce highly qualified, successful investigators whose careers will contribute substantially to research in CAM.

This fellowship may include focus on CAM treatments for chronic pain, chronic fatigue, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and cognitive impairment. In collaboration with their mentors, Fellows will develop and conduct research projects, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research, and educational activities.

Applicants must be US citizens. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a background in medicine, behavioral sciences, biological sciences, biomedical engineering, or statistics. Additional credentials in CAM are not required but are seen as a plus. Suitable CAM modalities include, but not limited to, asana yoga, yoga nidra, guided imagery, meditation, tai chi, acupuncture, and QiGong.

Our center specializes in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), memory problems (including dementia) and chronic pain. Individualized, mentored research and clinical training is combined with a state-of-the-art curriculum that emphasizes neuroscience (with a particular emphasis on advanced neuroimaging techniques), mental health systems, quality improvement methods, education and service delivery.

Fellows devote 75% of their time to research and education activities and 25% to clinical training. There is also opportunity to explore projects in psychology and dementia with WRIISC, MIRECC, and Stanford faculty. In collaboration with their mentors, Fellows will develop and conduct a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technologies for research, educational activities, and clinical service delivery.

To be eligible to apply for the WRIISC Fellowship Program, an MD or DO applicant must be able to provide evidence of:

  1. U.S. citizenship or immigration status (current, unexpired visa and ECFMG [Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates] certificate that is valid indefinitely; or evidence of naturalization or permanent US immigrant status) (Applicants on a J-1 visa must have current ECFMG sponsorship as well.)
