National Referral Program

The National Referral Program is:

  • For Veterans with:
    • Complex health history with no known cause (Medically Unexplained Symptoms— MUS).
    • A medical history that includes many tests and treatment with little to no symptom improvement;
    • Possible deployment-related environmental exposures; and
  • For PCPs who desire a second opinion using a multi-specialty team approach.

What Services Are Offered?

  • Multidisciplinary Evaluations for Post-Deployment Health Concerns
  • Environmental Exposure Assessments
  • Neuropsychological Evaluations
  • Post-Deployment Health Education

Am I Eligible?

In order to participate in this program, Veterans must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Combat deployment or military environment exposure
  • Multi-symptom illness that is medically unexplained or difficult to diagnosis
  • Physical and mental ability to participate in a comprehensive evaluation

How Do I Make a Referral?

Generally speaking, WRIISC program referrals for our National Referral Program “Second Opinion Evaluations for Veterans” are based on geographic location.

In order to initiate a referral, please complete the following steps:

  • Complete the WRIISC Assessment Note in the VA’s Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS). Click here for detailed instructions.
  • After the WRIISC Assessment Note has been placed into CPRS, please contact the WRIISC coordinator in your region.
  • Contact information for these coordinators is outlined below for the three WRIISC locations:
    • For CA WRIISC, this number is 650-493-5000 ext. 60350.
    • For DC WRIISC, this number is 202-745-8000 ext. 6533.
    • For NJ WRIISC, this number is 973-676-1000 ext. 2500.
    • IMPORTANT:The WRIISC coordinators will review the consults to ensure that the Veterans meet the eligibility criteria for the program.
  • If you are a Veteran who lives near one of the WRIISCs and are interested in participating in any of the WRIISC regional programs, please contact your regional WRIISC directly.

What Do I Need to Bring?

  • Please bring all of your non-VA medical records.
  • If you have a copy of your active duty medical records, please bring these to your evaluation.
  • Please see our packing list for recommended items to bring.

The VA will pay for expenses for Veterans coming for WRIISC NRP evaluations.

IMPORTANT: Family members are encouraged to participate in WRIISC evaluations. However, at this time, the WRIISC cannot pay for family members' travel expenses.
